Important information about procedures for opening a new account
To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law required all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

What this means for you: When you open an account, we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and other information that will allow us to identify you. We may also ask to see your driver's license or other identifying documents.

Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union is committed to protecting the privacy of our members nonpublic personal information and ensuring the accuracy of such information. Protecting nonpublic personal information and using it in a manner consistent with our members expectations is a high priority for everyone associated with Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union. Nonpublic personal information generally means financial information that is identified with you that is not obtainable from a public source.

Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union maintains systems, policies and procedures to protect nonpublic personal information from being accessed by unauthorized persons. Employee access to personal member information is limited to those employees who need to know that information to provide products and services to you. Personal information is retained only as long as necessary to service member accounts, conform to safe and sound business practices or to satisfy legal requirements.

Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union will only share information to administer products and services we provide, when required to do so by the government or when we partner with other businesses to offer a broader array of products or services. Our Credit Union will partner only with businesses that follow strict confidentiality requirements. The businesses that we select will offer products designed to enhance our members economic well being. Under no circumstances will we authorize these firms to charge your account without your express consent and we will not sell member information to telemarketing firms.

How We Obtain Nonpublic Personal Member Information
We generally obtain personal member information from you. For example, when you open an account with us or apply for credit.

In the daily conduct of business, we collect and maintain various types of information about our members, including:

  • Identification information, such as account numbers, social security numbers, and addresses
  • Information from credit reporting agencies and
  • Account activity information, such as payment histories and transactions.

How We May Use Your Nonpublic Personal Information
We use nonpublic personal information only for legitimate business purposes that are compliant with applicable laws and regulations.

Your nonpublic personal information may be used to:

  • Protect the security of your account. For example, Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union may use personal information for identification purposes, such as your name, address and birth date to prevent unauthorized persons from accessing an account.
  • Conduct our business in a safe and sound manner.
  • Satisfy legal requirements. For example, Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union will use a members social security number for federal income tax reporting purposes.

Information Disclosed to Service Providers/Joint Marketing
On a confidential basis, Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union may disclose your nonpublic personal information to companies that perform marketing services on our behalf or to other financial institutions with which we have joint marketing agreements. This may include:

  • Information we receive from you on an application and other forms, such as your name, address or social security number
  • Information to third party servicers such as check printers and student loan services.
  • We are sometimes required to disclose your nonpublic personal information in order to comply with subpoenas, court orders, and legal reporting requirements such as dividend reporting to the Internal Revenue Service.
  • We may disclose information relating to our experience with you to credit reporting agencies under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
  • We may disclose your nonpublic personal information with your written consent, including when you give someone power of attorney or other authorization to act on your behalf.
  • We may also disclose nonpublic personal information to protect your accounts against fraud and unauthorized transactions, to resolve member disputes, and, as necessary to Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union regulators, attorneys, accountants and auditors.

Under no circumstances, will Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union disclose to any unaffiliated third party any account number or access code to any of your accounts with us for any marketing purposes.

At Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union, it is important to us that the information we maintain about your accounts is as accurate as possible. We maintain internal controls to ensure the accuracy of such information. If you believe that any such information is inaccurate or incomplete, please contact us and we will take appropriate action to correct or amend our records.
